What is AKC FETCH?

AKC FETCH is a structured retrieving sport for dogs created by the American Kennel Club. It’s designed to test and showcase a dog’s natural ability to chase, pick up, and return an object—usually a ball or bumper—under increasingly challenging conditions.

What it involves

In AKC Fetch, your dog must:

  • Chase a thrown object

  • Pick it up cleanly

  • Return it directly to you

  • Release it properly

Sounds simple—but the difficulty increases across levels.

Levels of AKC Fetch

There are four title levels, each with stricter rules:

  1. Novice (FTN) – Short distances, simple retrieves

  2. Intermediate (FTI) – Longer throws, more control required

  3. Advanced (FTA) – Adds distractions and more precision

  4. Retriever (FTR) – Most challenging, with complex scenarios

The above titles are given at sanctioned AKC FETCH Trials and are not a part of Hot Shot Dog Sports FETCH training classes.  Classes are to familiarize dogs and handlers with the AKC FETCH sport and to help them prepare for upcoming AKC FETCH Trials.

Key features

  • Open to all breeds and mixed-breed dogs

  • Focuses on control, focus, and retrieving instinct

  • Less complex than traditional field trials or hunt tests

  • Great entry-level dog sport for beginners

Why people do it

  • Builds a stronger bond between dog and handler

  • Provides mental and physical exercise

  • Offers a fun, goal-oriented activity with official titles

If your dog loves playing fetch, this is basically turning that natural behavior into a recognized sport with progression and awards.
